The Centenary-A Milestone

The ‘Madras Record Office’ which had undergone metamorphoses as “Madras State Archives”, Tamilnadu Archives and finally Department of Archives and Historical Research over a Century since it started functioning as a separate establishment in 1909. Having completed a Century, the Government issued Orders to celebrate Centenary Year in a fitting manner.

The events that marked the Centenary Celebrations were:-

1. A College Level Quiz Competition

2. An Endowment Lecture

3. Launch of website

4. Centenary Celebration Function

College level Quiz Competition:

A Quiz Competition on Archives and History was conduced on 14th October 2009 in which student from 19 colleges participated.
The Quiz Programme was conducted by Dr.sudha Seshian in the presence of the Principal Secretary to Government, State Higher Education Department who distributed Certificates to all the participants.

Endowment Lecture:

As the academic event of the Centenary Celebrations, an Endowment Lecture on ‘Archives and South Indian History’ was organised on 16th October 2009 and was delivered by Dr.A. Ramasamy, Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, Chennai. The Forum was presided over by the Principal Secretary to Government, Department of Higher Education. Professors, Scholars and students from Universities and colleges participated.

Departmental Website Launch:

Marking the Centenary year the Department of Tamilnadu Archives and Historical Research, the Departmental website, designed to contain its history, duties and functions, was launched on 27th October 2009 by the Chief Secretary to the Government of Tamilnadu

Centenary Celebration Function - the Grand Finale:
                                                                                                                 
The Centenary Celebrations, the final event was held on 29th October 2009. The Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister was the Chief Guest. The other State dignitaries who honoured the function by their participation were, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Hon’ble Minister for Information.

The Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of TamilNadu launched the Centenary Celebration –Commemoration Souvenir, declared open the Exhibition of Archival Records and also the additional Library buildings. The Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education distributed shields to the winners of the Quiz Competition. The Hon’ble Minister for Information released the booklet on the exhibits of the Exhibition.
